Learn About AB 247: Enhancing California's School Facilities

At Long Beach Facilities Development & Planning Department, we strive to keep our community informed about initiatives impacting our educational infrastructure. Here’s what you need to know about AB 247:

Addressing Critical Needs
AB 247 aims to address significant challenges facing California’s K-12 classrooms. With many schools facing aging facilities and infrastructure, the bill proposes funding for crucial upgrades in transitional kindergarten, early childhood education, disaster response readiness, universal internet access, lead abatement, and climate adaptation.

Timing and Funding
If passed, AB 247 would be California's first statewide education bond since 2016. This funding is essential as it has been eight years since new funds were allocated for school facility improvements statewide. The funds would help districts address deferred maintenance and modernization needs, ensuring safer and more conducive learning environments for students.

Support for Local Communities
The bill provides matching funds to school districts, enabling them to combine local and general obligation bond dollars. This partnership supports various projects, including construction, modernization, career technical education initiatives, charter facility programs, and facilities essential for communities affected by hardship or disasters.

Adaptation to Current Challenges
AB 247 reflects updated realities by including provisions for interim housing following natural disasters and adjusting construction cost calculations to align with actual economic conditions. These measures are designed to ensure that funds are used efficiently and effectively.

Ensuring Accountability and Completion
Many districts struggle with completing projects promised under previous local bonds due to rising costs. AB 247 aims to help districts fulfill these commitments, ensuring that projects are completed without compromising on quality or scope.

Impact on Students and Communities
Improving school facilities through AB 247 is crucial for enhancing student learning environments and supporting community resilience. Research shows that well-maintained and modern facilities contribute positively to student engagement and academic achievement, benefiting the entire community.
